African Animals

Lions are the only cats that live in groups. Their Pride can be up to 30 lions. Female lions are the hunters, and the males protect the pride's territory and their young. African lions spend up to 21 hours sleeping and resting every day. They are more active at night and have good night vision. Lions are about 7 times stronger than a human. They are very affectionate to one another and show love by rubbing heads, and resting together.

Zebras stick together in herds. Zebra's stripes are like human fingerprints. No two zebras have the same pattern of stripes. Their stripes are used to help camouflage (or hide) them from predators. Zebras can sleep standing up. They are good communicators with each other. A snort can say they are happy while a two syllable cry can warn the herd of approaching danger. They also use their facial expressions and their ears to communicate with each other.

African elephants are the largest land animals. You can tell the three species of elephant about by their ears. African elephants' ears are much larger than Asian elephants. Elephants have over 150,000 muscles in their trunks. They can use their trunks as a snorkel with they swim. Elephant tusks are actually teeth that are made of ivory. Elephants are constantly eating. They eat grasses, leaves, shrubs, fruits and roots.
Elephants communicate in a variety of ways. They can make loud sounds like a trumpet call or sounds so quiet humans can't hear them. They also feel vibrations through their feet and bones to learn about each other and their surroundings.

Meerkats are very social creatures they live in groups called, mobs or clans. They work together to take care of their young and stand together to protect themselves from predators. They stand up close together and make themselves look like one big scary animal. They live underground in tunnels. They eat small lizards and bugs, even scorpions! They are immune to some snake's venom. They are in the mongoose family.

Armadillos are usually active at night. They live in burrows and can dig very quickly. They eat termites and other small insects. They are mammals and usually give birth to quadruplets ( four babies) Their four babies are all either boys or girls, not both.

The Giraffe is the tallest mammal on Earth. There are four species of giraffe. They are mostly quiet animals, but they do groan, hiss, snore and grunt to communicate. They can be 14 to 19 feet tall. Giraffes are found in groups known as towers. It takes 15 months for a baby giraffe to grow in it's mother. It has to drop almost 6 feet when it's born!

Kookaburras have a big and distinctive humanlike laugh. They are good hunters that live in close knit family groups. A kookaburra couple stays together for life (10-20 years) The female is larger than the male. A group of kookaburras are called a flock or a riot.
